Typology Awards

The Typology Awards are given to architecture and design firms excelling in a specific architectural typology. These awards spotlight the in-depth knowledge of firms that have the ability to respond to unique programmatic challenges, designing buildings that are exemplary in their genre. There are also dedicated awards for landscape architecture and interior design. Firms that specialize in more than one type of project are encouraged to enter multiple Typology Award categories to maximize their chances of securing an accolade.


Architecture

ARCH: Private Residential – For architecture and/or design firms demonstrating excellence in the private residential typology. Firms should submit 3 to 6 private residential projects, with at least 3 built within the last 10 years. Eligible firms for the Private Residential Award can also submit for a Best of the Year Firm Award with some or all of the same projects.

ARCH: Multi Unit Residential – For architecture and/or design firms demonstrating excellence in the multi unit residential typology. Firms should submit 3 to 6 multi unit residential projects, with at least 3 built within the last 10 years. Eligible firms for the Multi Unit Residential Award can also submit for a Best of the Year Firm Award with some or all of the same projects.

ARCH: Commercial – For architecture and/or design firms demonstrating excellence in the commercial typology. Firms should submit 3 to 6 commercial projects, with at least 3 built within the last 10 years. Commercial projects may include but are not limited to:

  • Coworking Spaces
  • Office Buildings
  • Office Interiors
  • Retail
  • Shopping Centers
  • Pop Ups & Temporary Commercial Structures
  • Mixed Use Buildings
  • Factories & Warehouses
  • Showrooms
  • Transportation Infrastructure
  • Unbuilt Commercial Projects

Eligible firms for the Commercial Award can also submit for a Best of the Year Firm Award with some or all of the same projects.

ARCH: Cultural – For architecture and/or design firms demonstrating excellence in the cultural typology. Firms should submit 3 to 6 cultural projects, with at least 3 built within the last 10 years. Cultural projects may include but are not limited to:

  • Museums
  • Gallery & Exhibition Spaces
  • Halls & Theaters
  • Sports & Recreational Facilities
  • Pavilions
  • Religious Buildings & Memorials
  • Unbuilt Cultural Projects

Eligible firms for the Cultural Award can also submit for a Best of the Year Firm Award with some or all of the same projects.

ARCH: Institutional – For architecture and/or design firms demonstrating excellence in the institutional typology. Firms should submit 3 to 6 institutional projects, with at least 3 built within the last 10 years. Institutional projects may include but are not limited to:

  • Kindergartens
  • Primary & High Schools
  • Higher Education & Research Facilities
  • Hospitals & Medical Facilities
  • Libraries
  • Government & Civic Buildings
  • Unbuilt Institutional Projects

Eligible firms for the Institutional Award can also submit for a Best of the Year Firm Award with some or all of the same projects.

ARCH: Hospitality – For architecture and/or design firms demonstrating excellence in the hospitality typology. Firms should submit 3 to 6 hospitality projects, with at least 3 built within the last 10 years. Hospitality projects may include but are not limited to:

  • Hotels & Resorts
  • Restaurants
  • Bars & Nightclubs
  • Health Care & Wellness
  • Unbuilt Hospitality Projects

Eligible firms for the Hospitality Award can also submit for a Best of the Year Firm Award with some or all of the same projects.

ARCH: Humanitarian – For architecture and/or design firms demonstrating excellence in the humanitarian typology. Firms should submit 3 to 6 humanitarian projects, with at least 3 built within the last 10 years. Humanitarian projects may include but are not limited to:

  • Refugee Structures
  • Temporary Housing
  • Disaster Recovery Projects
  • Projects Designed to Promote Political Engagement, Public Health & Peace
  • Rural Infrastructure, Hospitals, and Schools
  • Projects for Nonprofit Organizations
  • Community Driven Projects
  • Environmental Projects
  • Pro-bono Projects

Eligible firms for the Humanitarian Award can also submit for a Best of the Year Firm Award with some or all of the same projects.

ARCH: Conceptual – For architecture and/or design firms demonstrating excellence in conceptual / unbuilt projects. Firms should submit 3 to 6 conceptual projects, which have been created in the last 10 years. Conceptual projects include any unbuilt structure, building, group of buildings or master plan, and the projects may be fully conceptual or currently under construction. Eligible firms for the Conceptual Award can also submit for a Best of the Year Firm Award with some or all of the same projects.


Landscape

Landscape Architecture – For landscape architecture and/or architecture firms demonstrating excellence in landscape architecture. Firms should submit 3 to 6 landscape architecture projects, with at least 3 completed within the last 10 years. Projects can include public outdoor spaces, private gardens and landscape master plans. Eligible firms for the Landscape Architecture Award can also submit for a Best of the Year Firm Award with some or all of the same projects.


Interior Design

ID: Residential – For interior design and/or architecture firms demonstrating excellence in residential interiors. Firms should submit 3 to 6 interior residential projects, with at least 3 built within the last 10 years. Projects can include interior designs for private residences or multi unit housing. Eligible firms for the Residential Interior Design Award can also submit for a Best of the Year Firm Award with some or all of the same projects.

ID: Commercial – For interior design and/or architecture firms demonstrating excellence in commercial interiors. Firms should submit 3 to 6 interior commercial projects, with at least 3 built within the last 10 years. Projects can include interior designs for coworking spaces, offices, retail, shopping centers, pop ups and temporary, mixed use buildings, factories and warehouses, showrooms, hospitality, transport and infrastructure, or unbuilt commercial projects. Eligible firms for the Commercial Interior Design Award can also submit for a Best of the Year Firm Award with some or all of the same projects.

ID: Institutional/Cultural – For interior design and/or architecture firms demonstrating excellence in interiors outside of residential or commercial uses. Firms should submit 3 to 6 interior design projects, with at least 3 built within the last 10 years. Projects can include interior designs for cultural, institutional, humanitarian, or sports and recreation projects. Eligible firms for the Institutional/Cultural Interior Design Award can also submit for a Best of the Year Firm Award with some or all of the same projects.
